Artists Retreat

Designed as both a creative retreat and seasonal residence for an artist couple, this dune-side Cape Cod home thoughtfully blends living and working spaces within a serene coastal setting. Each owner was given a dedicated studio space integrated into the home’s architecture, allowing creativity and daily life to coexist seamlessly. Positioned to capture inspiring views across the surrounding landscape—including sightlines toward the former Truro home of painter Edward Hopper—the residence embraces light, solitude, and the natural beauty of the Outer Cape as an integral part of the artistic experience.

The house sits low against its dune setting, with several connected volumes under shed roofs. Cape Associates built it with Studio Fōr, and photographs by Lara Kimmerer show how it settles into the landscape.

Dark vertical siding on most of the walls is paired with lighter panels and warm wood-framed windows and doors. The roofs are standing-seam metal in gray, and a separate garage with a glass-paneled door completes the cluster.

The landscape is left largely natural, with native grasses, scrub oak and pitch pine between the buildings. A concrete retaining wall with broad steps leads up to a screened porch, and gravel and stone slabs make up the paths.

Inside, the kitchen has an exposed wood-beam ceiling, blue cabinetry, a pale wood island and pendants over a long dining table. Tall windows in warm wood frames bring in the changing light, and the open plan lets the kitchen, dining and living areas share one view.
