Outdoor spaces

Outdoor Living Spaces
Outdoor living on Cape Cod can mean a pool, a pergola, a roof deck or a covered bar. This collection shows the range of outdoor spaces Cape Associates has built.
Poolside, the photos include a thatched-roof bar with wooden stools, a freeform pool with pavers, and a white pergola beside a lap pool with a stone retaining wall.
Higher up, there are decks that look over marsh, dunes or the water:
• A rooftop deck with wood decking, lounge chairs and glass railings
• A balcony with white railings and a clear view of the bay
• A porch and deck on the back of a shingled house
• A wood-slatted privacy screen beside a sliding glass door
Natural cedar, white trim and bluestone appear again and again, which keeps each space tied to its house. Each outdoor room is built with the same care as the interior, using durable materials chosen to stand up to Cape Cod sun, salt and wind.

Custom Beach Staircase, Wellfleet, MA
On this Wellfleet property, Cape Associates built a custom wooden staircase that carries the owners from their house down a coastal bank to the beach. The route is a boardwalk path, a landing and then a long run of stairs.
The stairs use warm hardwood treads with cable railings, so the view stays open while the structure remains secure. Slim posts and wood top rails give the railings a clean profile against the sky.
At the top, an observation deck holds a pair of folding chairs and a small tile-topped table. A built-in bench sits on a lower landing, a quiet spot to pause above the bay.
Near the water, the stairs end at a set of stone steps through a rock revetment onto the sand. Native shrubs and pitch pines surround the whole route, and the wood and metal details are designed to stand up to sun, salt air and the exposed site.

Porches and Decks
This gallery collects porches and decks that Cape Associates has built on Cape Cod houses, from small screened rooms to wrap-around verandas.
Examples include:
• A screened porch with a dining table looking out on marsh
• A deck with white Adirondack chairs and cable railings
• A wide white porch along the front of a large home
• Raised decks on posts above grasses and the water
One house has a round tower corner with a deep wraparound porch under a hip roof, set on a wide lawn. A second house has a deck wrapped around a corner of its shingled walls.
Another shows a modern glass-and-cedar addition with a deck stepped down a sandy slope. Painted railings, shingle siding, brick chimneys and white trim recur across the set, and many of the decks take advantage of the water or open meadow beyond. Steep gables rise behind several of them.

Outdoor Showers
An outdoor shower is a Cape Cod favorite, and this collection shows a range of versions built by Cape Associates. Materials include cedar boards, mahogany-toned slats and natural fieldstone, each chosen to hold up to sun and salt air.
Some enclosures stand alone, with tall cedar doors and black hardware. Others attach to the house, tucked beside a back door on a small wood platform, or built into a stone wall beneath a deck.
• Horizontal slat screens for privacy and airflow
• Granite fieldstone walls with a shower head
• A built-in bench in a stone-backed stall
• Gravel and wood floors for drainage
One open-air version has louvered walls beside a freestanding tub and a cushioned daybed. Another uses shingles that match the house wall. Each design screens the user from view while staying open to air and light. Towel hooks and benches are within reach.

Screened Porches
Screened porches are a Cape Cod favorite, and this collection shows the many forms Cape Associates has built. Each one is set to take in air, shade and a view.
Some face tidal marsh or open water. Others look over gardens, a pool or woodland. Ceilings range from white beadboard to stained wood, and floors from painted decking to slate to natural wood.
Highlights from the photos:
• A multi-sided porch with a peaked ceiling
• Navy cushions and a round table on a stained wood deck
• Painted columns and a ceiling fan
• A raised porch with an outdoor stair
• A built-in bench beside a dining table
The porches sit on shingled and clapboard houses, and each one adds a room that is open to the breeze and protected from the bugs. Whatever the style, each porch is framed to keep screens clear of the view and to give furniture a comfortable place to sit.
